Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics

Conservative Dentistry is the branch of dentistry which is concerned with the conservation of teeth in the mouth. It embraces the practice of operative dentistry and endodontics and includes various kinds of direct and indirect restorations of individual teeth.

The department caters to under-graduates with 100 intake and post graduates with 6 intakes. It is well equipped with 34 dental chairs for under-graduates and 22 dental chairs for post-graduates and faculty. A separate pre-clinical phantom head lab is available for training under- graduate and post graduate students.

TREATMENTS OFFERED

Primary goal of the Department of Conservative dentistry and endodontics encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of sequalae of dental caries and includes the techniques and procedures to restore the teeth to full function and appearances in an aesthetically pleasing manner with as little loss of healthy tooth structure as possible. It also involves performing root canal treatment, rotary endodontics under Dental Operative Microscope and associated surgical procedures to rid the tooth of its offending malady. The treatment provided includes various fillings, root canal treatment, surgical endodontics, bleaching and management of traumatized teeth.

EQUIPMENT

The department has state of the art equipment which include digital radiography, Dental operative microscope, UV sterilizer, apex locators, thermoplasticizedguttapercha system, Endomotors, Sonic and ultrasonic units, power bleaching unit and composite pre-heater.

A fully installed ceramic unit and restorative dental laboratory capable of doing specialized laboratory work is also available.

Mission

Primary mission is to cater to the needs of rural people in and around Eluru in the best possible manner and to raise dental awareness among people. The department aims at maintaining the highest of standards in education, patient care as well as research activities.

Objectives

  1. To train undergraduate students to a level competent in the restoration, rehabilitation and maintenance of the dentition.
  2. To encourage post graduate students to undertake independent research and to develop an attitude to practice innovative treatment protocols.
  3. To promote cohabitation with various institutions and disciplines
  4. To provide optimal supervision of students by well qualified staff through continued staff development programs.
  5. To develop a critical mind for reading and understanding scientific literature and manufacturer advertising claims.

Undergraduate Study

The faculty trains the undergraduate students in the subject of Conservative dentistry and Endodontics as a part of their BDS curriculum. Upon graduation, the students are expected to be capable of assessing patients general and oral health and of formulating a comprehensive treatment plan, which might include components from other dental disciplines. The course will enable the student to acquire the knowledge of the relevant clinical literature, to develop a scientific approach to solving problem. The course will provide a foundation for successful clinical practice, or a stepping – stone toward an academic career.

Postgraduate Study

The Department offers full time post-graduate study of three years which is specialized and beyond the scope of general practice, with emphasis on restoration of appearance, occlusal form and function, esthetic dentistry, full mouth rehabilitation, endodontics therapy and surgeries- the successful completion would lead to the award of the Master’s degree. The postgraduation course involves case discussions, weekly journal club meetings, seminars, literature review, lectures and an independent research study which would lead to the submission of a dissertation to the university. In addition, the post graduate students are actively involved in the teaching of undergraduate students as well as in active patient care. The research component of the course is also emphasized upon with participation and presentations in national as well as international conference being mandatory.
