Oral Pathology & Microbiology

DEPARTMENT OF ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL PATHOLOGY MICROBIOLOGY AND FORENSIC ODONTOLOGY.

Oral and maxillofacial pathology is a specialized branch of dentistry concerned with scientific study of the cause and effect of oral and maxillofacial diseasesThe understanding of cause & affect is essential for diagnosis and development of rational treatment and preventive measures. There are more than 200 different types of diseases that affect the oral cavity.Based on the clinical appearance and history of oral lesions, a clinician can give a provisional diagnosis but many of these need to be confirmed through microscopic examination. Sound knowledge of oral pathology is essential for good clinical practice. Oral pathology not only deals with primary oral lesions but also with the oral manifestations of various systemic disorders.Forensic odontology which is an integral part of oral pathology deals with identification of dead and deceased.

Goals of the department .

  1. The twin goals of the department are to impart knowledge and understanding to the

students and secondly to accurately diagnose lesions ultimately serving the patients.

  1. To convey basic knowledge of normal Oral and Dental Anatomy and Histology.
  2. To elaborates on different pathologies arising from these tissues.
  3. Forensic odontology being part of Oral and Maxillofacial pathology helps in

identification, age and gender determination of individuals.

  1. Forensic odontology also helps in establishing the identity of victims in mass

disasters, and in medicolegal cases through bite mark analysis.

Teaching Programs:

The educational programs in Oral Pathology are extensive with courses for dental students, interns and postgraduate students.

Undergraduate Teaching Program:

The program provides lectures, seminars and practicalsfor 1st, 2nd and 3rd BDSStudents. Thefirst-yearstudents are trained in understanding the normal oral and dental anatomy and histology by lectures, practical’s and seminars. Practical session includes normal toothwax carving and microscopic slide examination. The present-day anatomy effects a long history of interaction with many clinical and basic sciences examples: anthropology, endodontics, forensics, orthodontics & pediatric dentistry to name a few. 2nd and 3rd yearBDS students are trained in identification of various oral diseases through theory and practical sessions. Interns are trained in preparation of ground section of teeth and assist in oral research work.

Post Graduate Teaching Program

The department offers full time post- graduate study over a span of three years, at the end of which the candidate is awarded MDS degree from Dr. YSR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada, which is in turn recognized by DCI. The Three-year post- graduate program that enables the students with the advanced knowledge of histology and anatomy of oral & para oral structures. The program offers insights into the classification of diseases affecting head and neck regions using laboratory techniques.Case discussions, demonstrations, group discussions, viva, seminars and Journal clubs are included in the curriculum.

Objectives:

  • To train a post graduate student to ensure higher aptitude in both general and applied

pathology dealing with nature of oral diseases.

  • To train the students to perform routine histopathological evaluation of specimens

relating to oral and maxillofacial region,’ to carry out routine diagnostic procedures

including hematological, cytological, microbiological, immunological& ultra-structural

investigations using electron microscopy.

  • Understanding of current research methodology, collection and interpretation of data.
